The word doula, comes from Ancient Greek and means “woman servant” also known as labor companion or birth worker. Doulas provide non-medical, physical and emotional support during labor and birth. Research tells us that women who have had a doula feel more in control of their birth, defined labor as less painful, had less anxiety after birth, were given an increase in self confidence, had lower incidence of postpartum depression, and an improved relationship with their partner because of the shared experience throughout labor and birth. Doulas provide support for birth at home, in birth centers, and in hospitals while honoring and respecting those you have chosen to be a part of your big day; whether that be your doctor, midwife, or friends and family. Doulas also help bridge the gap between you and your partner; equipping them with skills and direction so you can both enjoy labor and birth.
